The Crow and the Fox by Jean de La Fontaine

Master Crow, perched on a tree,
Held in his beak a piece of cheese.
Master Fox, drawn by the smell,
Said almost this to him:
“Hello, Mr. Crow.
How handsome you are! How beautiful you seem to me!
Without lying, if your voice
Is as beautiful as your plumage,
You are the Phoenix of all the guests in these woods.”
At these words, the Crow feels great joy;
And, to show off his beautiful voice,
He opens a wide beak, drops his prey.
The Fox takes it and says, “My dear sir,
Learn that every flatterer
Lives at the expense of the one who listens to him.
This lesson is well worth a piece of cheese, no doubt.”
The Crow, ashamed and embarrassed,
Swore, but a little late, that he would not be caught again.
